The Top 10 Portrait Locations in Southern Utah for Photographers

October 9, 2025 Portrait Photography

When I first started shooting portraits in Southern Utah, I was unsure of where to begin with locations. As I have ran my portrait business, I have amassed a lot of favorite locations that clients have loved. If you need suggestions for locations in Southern Utah between St. George and Cedar City, these are my top ten:

#10: Green Gate Village

Green Gate Village in downtown St. George is a historic area with shops, along with some nearby apartments with lights strung between buildings. These string lights have become iconic in St. George, and the rustic character of the Green Gate area itself has a great charm for photo sessions. It's even complete with an antique telephone box.

#9: Snow Canyon Overlook

This iconic overlook is easy to access from the Highway 18. The view is absolutley amazing right as the sun begins setting behind the horizon, and the large colorful sandstone makes a stricking background. There are also several lava rock outcrops that make great foreground, or seating options for portraits.

#8: Virgin River Trail

The Virgin River Trail stems from the Sullivan Soccer Park in Washinton. After a short walk through an asphalt path that follows the river, you'll arrive at a long boardwalk that is a great location for photos. The trail is also a short trek to the river if you (and your clients) are up for a bit of an adventure.

#7: Dixie Technical College

Located on the bluff in St. George, the large retaining walls and windows of the Dixie Tech are a great option for large groups. I've loved this location for things like school dance photos, along with larger family photoshoots.

#6: Petrified Dunes at Snow Canyon State Park

These majestic sandstone formations are not only impressive in and of themselves, but they also make a great location for portraits. There are a lot of hills and rocks to explore, and the broad area is also strewn with green shrubbery. The other benefit of these Snow Canyon locations is how close they are to each other, enabling some variety if you want to move between them.

#5: St. George Parking Garage

This free parking garage is a great option in St. George if you're looking for some more urban vibes in your photos. The industrial concrete with brick buildings in the background actually forms a really nice color pallette to work with, and the multiple levels also offer some variety within the location.

#4: Kirkland Field

This field in Washington is an expansive grassy area filled with mature trees, designated exclusively for photography. It is privately owned and free to use, but the owners also accept donations at the entrance. This is one of my most popular locations for families and senior photos, and the greenery is really difficult to beat anywhere else in sunny St. George.

#3: Wood Ranch Park

This is my absolute favorite photo location in Iron County, and the mountains and pines make it a perfect portrait location. I recently did a beauitufl bridal session at Wood Ranch, and they are some of my favorites I've done at this locaiton.

#2: Whiterocks ampitheater at Snow Canyon STate Park

These iconic white rocks offer endless opportunites for photos, and you can even catch a view of the rest of Snow Canyon by hiking all the way to the top, pictured right. The ampitheater is a short hike from the parking lot, and after reaching the rocks, they open into a massive sandstone bowl. The shade of the area also helps combat the harsh sun on the bright white rocks.

#1: Joshua Tree national landmark

This is my absolute favorite location for photos in all of Southern Utah. It's about a 45-minute drive from St. George, and it features thousands of Joshua Trees, many just as impressive as those in California's National Park. The remote location lets you shoot in all directions with picturesque mountains in the background. I love how the variety of tree sizes, shapes, and densities also allows you to get creative with compositions and placement.
