My Photography Journey - The Range of Focus

For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated by the world around me. When I picked up a camera for the first time at the age of 14, I found a whole new way to capture everything I saw, and I applied this to my photography. Throughout my journey as a photographer, I've found a way to reflect all of my favorite things in my photos, whether it be people, music, or the natural beauty of the American West. I've ran a successful business as a portrait photographer, photographed numerous concerts, and gone on many memorable adventures outdoors with my camera. I wanted a way to be able to tell everyone about all of these avenues I've explored, and that's why I created Focus Range.

I started my portraiture business with my first paid session nearly four years ago in December of 2021. With a borrowed camera that was over a decade old, and a family friend that was willing to take a chance on me with their engagement photos, I set out on what would become one of my truest passions and main sources of income throughout high school. Since then, I've delivered photos for hundreds of people and have learned so much about myself, and the art of photography. Between all of my portrait shoots, I have done senior photos, engagements, proposals, weddings, families and more. I still have more to learn and more sessions to experience, but I want to provide a candid view of my portraiture journey through this blog.

After moving to Cedar City, Utah to attend school at Southern Utah University, I was instantly hooked on the surprisingly vibrant local music scene of its small community. I found photo gigs (and some gigs as a bassist) at SokHop, where a small circle of live music enthusiasts gathers to hear live music almost every Tuesday night. I've made friends with some killer local bands, taken some of my favorite photos along the way, and I can't wait to see where I continue to go with concert photography. I'd love to share my story with you of how to get started in concert photography, and document my ongoing journey as I seek out bigger shows to capture.

Landscapes are where I really began with photography. It was as simple as finding my mom's old Canon EOS Rebel from 2007 with a kit lens and walking around outside experimenting with it. From there, I took a camera around with me wherever I went, and I have loved capturing the landscapes of all of my outdoor adventures. I love hiking and backpacking, and bringing those things together with photography has led to countless exciting expeditions. I want to be able to tell about some of my favorite adventures through this blog, and share some insight into my experience photographing the American West.

Along with portraits, concerts, and landscapes, I have a lot of experience in photo editing, along with a few creative techniques I've employed. I've heard a lot of other photographers that often see editing as dull, but necessary part of the photography process. I've always thought that my perspective is unique in that I often look forward to the editing process. I can't wait to share some of my editing experience throughout my stories in Focus Range. Along with editing, I love experimenting with technique, and I've been able to pull off a lot of exciting shots with longer exposures, with or without flash.
