How to Get Started as a Concert Photographer
Becoming a concert photographer
Before I got started as a concert photographer, I had no clue where to begin and how to land my first gig. I had just moved to my small college town, and I was just beginning to make connections and find local shows to attend. Within only a few weeks, I managed to get several photo gigs and become a presence in the local scene, and it only has snowballed upward from there. I'd love to share my experience and hopefully help you make the first steps as you begin your concert photography journey.
Making the first steps
The easiest way to get started shooting concerts is by going to smaller, local shows, and working up from there. In addition to ensuring you have the correct gear, starting small is an step to building your skills and concert photo career. In my case, I met the booking manager at a small promoter in town, and after chatting and showing her my portrait portfolio, I managed to become an assistant photographer for them. As soon as I had done some work there, I had my foot in the door and was able to build relationships with others in the scene.
The first show
At a lot of smaller shows and venues, getting the chance to shoot there is as easy as showing up and taking photos. This might mean buying a ticket and asking if you can bring your camera in. At the first concerts I photographed via my local small-town promoter, it isn't uncommon to see an attendee bring a camera and practice their skills. From there, you can meet other photographers at these shows, and make connections with venues and bands, leading to more gigs. I've been able to take photos for bands as large as Cardinal Bloom (pictured left) from these small local shows alone. These smaller shows are a great opportunity to build your portfolio as you work up to larger gigs. Once your portfolio shows some experience and variety, you can leverage it to land bigger shows.
I hope you can find my experience getting started as a concert photographer helpful as you begin your journey photographing shows. Be sure to stay tuned and follow Focus Range as I continue exploring concert photography and pursue bigger gigs in the Salt Lake scene!
